Abel Fernandez
Abel Fernandez is a sophomore at G. Holmes Braddock Senior High in Miami. Abel is a captain of the varsity baseball team at Braddock. Abel first started playing baseball at the age of 5, and has been playing ever since. When asked whether he thinks that team sports have had an impact on certain traits and characteristics, he answered with a resounding yes. Abel believes this because of his own personal experiences. He stated that over the years baseball has help improve his ability to work with others, patience, perseverance, devotion, punctuality, and ability to face adversity. He believes that without baseball (or team sports in general), he either wouldn't possess these traits or they wouldn't be as developed.
When asked what traits he think shave been affected the most, he answered social skills and perseverance. "I've never been a very social person, but the more teams I became a part of the more I learned to socialize," he says. He also commented on how baseball has affected his perseverance specifically, "Well you can't always have a great game, and there's always that heart breaking loss that you have to get over, forget about, and then work harder for the next time."
Now, possessing all these traits are great, but if you are unable to apply them into the world outside of sports, they're almost meaningless to possess them. Fortunately, this isn't the case with Abel. When asked to apply one of his acquired traits to life outside of sports, he gave an example of perseverance in schoolwork: "School-wise you can never be put down by a bad test grade or teacher, you have learn to find ways to succeed."
